Kate Alkemade

Lymphoedema Physiotherapy, Early Intervention after Cancer diagnosis & Neurological Rehabilitation.

Bachelor of Physiotherapy with Honours (Newcastle University), Accredited Lymphoedema Physiotherapist (Australasian Lymphology Association), Australian Physiotherapy Association Lymphoedema, Cancer and Palliative Care Group Member

My Background

My early career was focused on Neurological and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation with a side interest in Palliative Care. My experiences in those health spaces sparked an intense curiosity about swollen legs and I began asking  questions – how can swelling be better managed? How can quality of life for people with swelling be improved? I became an accredited Lymphoedema Therapist in 2018 and haven’t looked back. The Lymphatic system is a truly amazing part of the human body which responds so well to individually tailored physiotherapy treatment programs encompassing skin care, exercise, targeted compression and manual lymphatic drainage. I’ve been lucky enough to have had the professional experience of running early intervention programs to prevent the development of lymphoedema. I also have expertise in managing chronic lymphedema in all areas of the body as well as assisting people experiencing lipedema.

My Approach & Philosophy

I am particularly passionate about the role education plays in empowering people to manage their own body and their own health. I love working with individuals while they realise their health and lifestyle goals.
